This book features something that may be a little more correlated with "new-age" practices than Witchcraft, but is really useful for both, as well as for any other denomination of magical working: a guide to understanding and exploring your own intentions and process, both inuitive and psychological, in working to create or craft and then cast a spell. The author begins by explaining the relationship of spells to the context of development of Magic over the course of history, and explores some inriguing facets of spellwork, such as, how do you know your spell "worked", what to do if the spell goes wrong or you want to "undo" it later. The author's intention is to present a "non-denominational" approach to spellwork, which has its pros and cons. On the plus side, it results in a flexible, spacious approach that is less likely to "impose" much on anyone, thus availing itself of access to more people. On the down side, the result may feel a bit bland for the fey, or highly imaginative or creative souls, particularly given the type of example spells the author includes in her book. To me, they smell of Martha Stewart. For instance there is a Spell named, "Peace Poupourri", another called "Mint Melody", and then one termed "Increase Your Attractiveness" which merely involves eating a ripe strawberry. These fluffy creations lack the gritty spark that kindles my fire, but I value the book as a guide to creative crafting of one's own spells. This book is the best book on spellcraft ever. It is written from a secular point of view and correctly states that spells are not the easy way out-they take a lot of work and exhaust you. I think alot of other books are marketed to make your life easier-and while that can be true it is not an effortless endeavor. What I found useful was the explanation of correspondences and how an herb can be associated with several different things at once and that you can charge it/call upon one aspect it is associated with. Early on in my journey I used to be put off by using an herb that had many associations because I would get that "what's so special" about it mentality going and it would turn me off to the spell I wanted to do. I didn't even understand how they worked back then, I was just cook book crafting and I often doubted the writer's correspondence list [I was afraid to trust my intuition back then]. Also, you don't feel pressured into using aorrespondenced or props-"use one, some, or none." This book explains WHY these correspondences are powerful spell aids (hint, it's not because they possess magical powers). The author emphasizes using your intuition and highlights the fact that all of our energies are different. I have a strong personality and so I think casting a spell at noon during the hour of xyz with herb abc with an athame is good for me whereas for the same spell you may want to cast it at midnight in the hour of xyz with herb abc with a cauldron. Every crafter must use their intuition and take notes on what works and what doesn't. What many beginner books do not cover in enough detail is raising energy, (a+b)x=c not a+b=c ....x being energy and energy is what makes your spell[s] work. This book explains the energy of the world (the web) and how spellcraft works with this web and I think the author's rational approach will touch many people with many different spiritualities and attitudes. Spellcraft, as presented in this book, could easily be blended into spiritual Christianity, so for those of you trying to blend the craft [without other deities] with Christianity, this is a must have book for you.
